Give Back Beyond International
GBB INTERNATIONALTHE FOUNDING – go where?
Responding to feedback from our members, we launched our first trip to Catamayo, Ecuador in 2005 with 12 Give Back Cincinnati volunteers. This group was our test launch as we learned what it meant to do a service travel trip and how we should organize ourselves to make the best experience possible.
A team was selected and formed, the group set about preparing for the trip, fundraising, and getting ready for an incredible experience. From this point we have established a regular rotation of destinations: Guatemala (Central America), Romania (Eastern Europe), and Ghana (Africa) which enables us to experience three unique cultures. We made our first trip to Vietnam (Asia) in the fall of 2011.
This rotation will also serve as a basis for us to create a deeper interaction with those communities moving beyond housing to also help with issues of health and education.
Habitat for Humanity has an international arm, Global village, which gives participants a unique opportunity to become active partners with people of another culture. Team members work alongside members of the host community, raising awareness of the burden of poverty housing and building decent, affordable housing worldwide. From our trips we have seen the huge impact that these trips make, for those we are serving and for those that participate. We will continue to grow and develop International Service travel to provide an outlet for volunteers seeking an experience to expand their horizons and encounter a foreign culture in a new way.
We will adjust our annual schedule and evaluate if multiple trips a year are possible based on overall demand from volunteers. Key to the successful growth of the program (as with all of our GBC programs) is finding and building leaders for future trips, if you are interested in learning more about being a trip lead, please e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org ‘Trip Lead’ in the title.
